3 year ban on YouTube lifted in Pakistan

Pakistan has removed a three year ban on YouTube following the launch of a local version which gives access to the government to demand removal of any kind of material it considers offensive.

The YouTube access in the country was banned by the government in September 2012 after an anti-Islam film, 'Innocence of Muslims', was uploaded to the site. The film sparked violent protests across major cities.

The new version of YouTube, however, allows Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for access to block the offending material.

"On the recommendation of PTA, the government of Pakistan has allowed access to the recently launched country version of YouTube for internet users in Pakistan", the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom said.

Thousands of webpages have been blocked in Pakistan in the last few years when the internet access spread all over.
