Ghaziabad to hold 2nd car-free day today

Ghaziabad: To encourage motorists to give up their four-wheelers for a day and use public transport, Ghaziabad city is holding its second car-free day on Thursday. Volunteers of civil defence in the city will join hands with residents for the second car-free day scheduled to be held on March 10. The event will be observed only in Kavi Nagar zone of Ghaziabad.

According to Chairman of RWA federation Colonel (retd) T P S Tyagi, "RWA representatives will distribute pamphlets and flowers among car-owners to spread awareness about vehicular pollution."

"The district administration had asked us to provide support to RWAs for the event. We have enlisted 30 volunteers to aid and assist residents in conducting the event. The volunteers will undertake the duties assigned to them by the RWA federation," said Lalit Jaiswal, chief warden of the civil defence (Ghaziabad).

Reportedly, a street play will be staged at Ramlila Maidan in Kavi Nagar around 8 AM today.  Mohan Nagar, Vijay Nagar and Vasundhara will be the focused areas, he said.

In order to promote the event, the Uttar Pradesh roadways department has agreed to ply 20 buses which will carry banners reading 'car-free-day'. A poster campaign — with the words 'I am ready for carpooling' — has been devised for the event. Volunteers will stick the posters on cars after taking permission to do so.

10 additional buses between Kavi Nagar and Vaishali Metro station will also be plied by the department.

The car free day, organised by Ghaziabad Federation of RWAs, will be observed on 10th of every month.
