16-year-old swimming champ commits suicide in Ghaziabad

A swimming champion of 16 years of age with over 200 medals to her credit allegedly committed suicide at her residence in Ghaziabad early Monday morning by hanging herself,  while her sister slept in the same room.

Saira Sirohi, a student of class 11th of the Delhi Public School in Ghaziabad, was found hanging by a shawl from a ventilator located above a door in her room, by her sister at around 1.30 am when she woke up for a glass of water.

"We have sent the body for a post mortem examination. We did not find a suicide note in the house during the initial search", said Ashok Shishodia, SHO of the Kavi Nagar police station.

Sirohi grabbed limelight in September 2008 when she swam non-stop for nearly 38 km at the age of eight. She was training to represent India in the Olympics.

Police said that further probe regarding the case is underway. "As per the autopsy report, death was caused by strangulation due to hanging. The ligature mark on the neck bore a V-shape. The mobile phone of the deceased girl has not been handed over to police yet. Further investigations are under way", said Ajaypal, SP (City), Ghaziabad.
