Ghaziabad/Meerut: Ghaziabad police on Thursday arrested three robbers after a shootout that lasted nearly three hours in Ghaziabad near the National Capital. At least two of the robbers and a police constable received bullet injuries in the gunbattle between the police and a gang of robbers in Ghaziabad. 

The gunbattle started after the police surrounded a sugarcane field where the suspects were hiding after robbing three meat businessmen at Kharkhoda town in Hapur district yesterday.

Reportedly, Police in Ghaziabad’s Modinagar region got a wireless message at 11 a.m. on Thursday that burglars looted Rs.25.5 lakh in cash from dairy cattle merchants out Kharkhauda in Meerut area and got away in an auto.

The IG personally took charge of the situation. SP (rural), Ghaziabad Rajesh Kumar Pandey was in Modinagar at the time, and left immediately on receiving a signal from the IG.

At least 100 policemen were engaged in the gunbattle in which the robbers fired atleast 20 to 30 rounds. Reports suggest that there were two fake number plates inside the robber's car DL1C BU 7791.

When a police team stopped the car, the men allegedly opened fire. The accused then abandoned the car and ran into the sugarcane fields where they were surrounded by a police team.

The accused started firing at police personnel who were chasing them on motorcycle and one policeman was injured in the firing.

SP (rural) MM Beg of Meerut said, "We managed to recover the entire Rs25 lakh that had been looted from Meerut meat trader Sharafat Ali on Thursday morning."

The three arrested accused were later identified as Rohini resident Amit alias Vicky, and Baghpat residents Pradeep and Vikas. While, Amit and Pradeep suffered serious injuries during the operation and are undergoing treatment at a hospital. Police recovered some country-made pistols, 30-35 live cartridges and the stolen car from their possession.
