Ghaziabad: In the series of its achievements, Samachar Plus's most popular programme "WANTED" has gained a great breakthrough in its sole-aim of making "India a crime-free nation' after the dreaded criminal, carrying a reward of Rs. 50000 on his head, was arrested by Uttar Pradesh's special task force from Ghaziabad on Sunday night.

The accused, Devendra alias Debu, wanted in several cases of murder, loot, extortion and kidnappings was arrested by Ghaziabad police at Shamli area here after a brief encounter, police said today.

In the year 2008, Debu, a former Delhi Police constable, had looted Rs. 25 lakh from an ICICI Bank branch located in Kaushambhi and since then he was absconding. Apart from this, the notorious criminal was wanted in over 18 cases of murder, extortion, dacoity and kidnappings and carries a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head, police said.

According to police, Devender Singh, a resident of Saidpur village, had several cases registered against him in UP. He was sacked from Delhi Police in 2002 after he robbed a jeweller in Ghaziabad.

Acting on a tipoff, police laid a trap for the accused near Shastri Nagar.

"Police had received a tipoff that Devender would come to Ghaziabad to strike a property deal. A police team led by DSP Raj Kumar Mishra laid a trap for the accused near Shastri Nagar," said Ajay Sahdev, Additional SP of the STF.

As per Sahdev, when the police team noticed Devender walking in the area, they asked him to surrender, but he fired two rounds and tried to flee. The police team retaliated and overpowered him within minutes. A pistol, four live cartridges, four empty cartridges, cash, a driving licence and a mobile phone were recovered from the accused, he added.

Police said during interrogation, Devender revealed he was selected as a constable in Delhi Police in 1989. He confessed to committing his first robbery in 1997 to make a quick buck. He committed two more robberies in 1998, after which he was suspended from the force.
