Only 339 streetlights work in Udyog Vihar, reveals RTI

In an RTI reply, the HSIIDC has revealed that Udyog Vihar has only 339 functional streetlights. An area spread over 681 acres, housing 1200 industries and thousands of employees has just 12 high mast lights and 327 streetlight poles. "We have raised this issue with the HSIIDC several times. They keep saying that they will look into the matter but nothing has been done so far," said Raj Singhla, president of Chamber of Industries of Udyog Vihar. Industrialists complain that poorly illuminated streets lead to security issues for women, especially those who do not get a company cab. Singhla said, "There are a lot of garment units where women from the lower strata work and they don't get cabs. Poor street lighting is a big security threat for them." The only well-lit stretches are Shyam Chowk to Jwala Mill and Shanker Chowk to Old Delhi road. "Most other roads and bylanes get dark after evening hours without a single streetlight on the road," said Singhla. A senior official from HSIIDC refused to comment on the issue. However, the land development agency claimed in an RTI reply that the work will be given to a contractor after inviting tenders to the tune of Rs 34.55 lakh for installing the streetlights but no work has started as of now.
