Greater Noida rape victim succumbs to burn injuries

New Delhi: A 15-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped and set ablaze in Greater Noida's Tigri village on Monday, succumbed to her burn injuries this morning in Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital.

The minor girl, who had suffered over 95 per cent burns, lost her life at Safdarjung Hospital around 3.30 am on Wednesday.

The girl died in the wee hours, a senior doctor said.

The victim had sustained 95 per cent burn injuries after the 18-year-old accused, who has been arrested, poured kerosene on her and set her on fire on her roof on Sunday night.

One Ajay Sharma, who lives in the same village, had allegedly called her to the roof where he first raped the minor before setting her ablaze on Sunday night. A police official told that the girl in her statement had accused her neighbour Sharma of rape and attempt to murder, before breathing her last.

According to the police, the youth allegedly went to the girl's house and met her on the roof where he raped her and set her ablaze. He then fled the spot.

The accused boy's family is pleading for his clemency, stating that he is a minor.

The girl's father, who runs a tailor shop, found her covered in burn after hearing her screaming from rooftop terrace on Sunday. He also claimed that they had filed a complaint against the accused boy some 10 months ago of repeatedly harassing their daughter.
