BJP leader Kundanika Sharma arrested for hate speech in Agra, granted interim bail

Agra: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Braj region unit vice-president and corporator Kundanika Sharma was arrested on Monday for making an alleged hate speech at a condolence meeting of VHP leader Arun Mahour on February 28 this year. Sharma was presented before the judicial magistrate at civil court at around 5 PM on Monday which later released her on interim bail till April 2.

“We arrested Kundanika Sharma from near her house at Kamla Nagar locality this morning… While hundreds of Sharma’s supporters gathered outside the court after she was brought there, no protest or sloganeering took place,” Loha Mandi Station House Officer Harendra Pal Singh said, adding efforts are being made to arrest other two accused.

Notably, Sharma was one among three people booked for hate speech during a condolence meeting on February 28, after the murder of VHP leader Arun Mahour. Sharma, Lavaniya and Chowdhary, along with a few unidentified persons, were booked under IPC Sections 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc, and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony).

Many BJP, VHP, Bajrang Dal and Shiv Sena leaders had attended this meeting on that day, including Union minister of state for human resource development Ram Shankar Katheria and MP from Fatehpur Sikri Chaudhary Babulal.

To recall, on February 28, a meeting was held by RSS and VHP leaders, where Muslims were allegedly equated to “demons” and “descendants of Ravana”, and warned of a “final battle.”
