Allahabad turns a safe hub for auto-lifters

Auto-lifters find Allahabad a safe hub as the increasing graph of auto-lifting proves to be a menace for the cops and vehicle owners.

Over 1700 cases of auto lifting were registered in police records in Sangam city alone in 2014 wherein the police circles including Colonelganj, Civil Lines and Kydganj had topped the chart. The number of auto lifting cases in year 2013 was 1,460.

The highest number of auto lifting cases were registered in police record in year 2014 as compared to theft, burglary, murder, loot and robbery. The city has turned a safe hub for the auto lifters throughout the year as compared to neighboring districts like Pratapgarh, Kaushambi and Fatehpur. The city had in fact registered 76 percent of cases of auto lifting alone among the four districts of the range wherein the percentage of recovery was very dismal.

Police officials admit that the prime reason behind registering more cases of auto lifting in the Sangam city are the majority of markets, coaching institutes, marriage lawns, educational institutes and other commercial activity centres in city. Ironically, around 63 percent of vehicles stolen by auto lifters were parked either at road side corners or at unauthorised parking slots. Ironically, out of 1,713 cases of vehicle theft, 997 cases were reported in three police circles including Colonelganj, Civil Lines and Kydganj exposing the fact that auto lifters are more active in posh Civil Lines, and Colonelganj areas.
