Tension grips Varanasi over Ganesh idol immersion

Tension prevails in the temple town after the district administration and police stopped the immersion of Ganesh idols in river Ganga in view of Allahabad High Court order. The Ganesh Puja organisers along with the saffron brigade sat in protest at Godowlia as they were stopped from immersing their idol at the Dashaswamedh Ghat.

The Sri Kashi Maratha Utsav Samiti carried out its immersion procession on Monday evening with the end of Ganeshotsava which was stopped by administration at Godowlia at 6pm on Monday before it could reach Dashaswamedh Ghat. Following the action of officials the Samiti stopped their procession at same venue and started sit-in.

The ADM city Vindhyavasini Rai and SP city Sudhakar Yadav, said the puja organisers can't be allowed to immerse the idol in Ganga to make sure that the HC order is being followed.

"They are being suggested to take the procession at alternative sites for immersions like Samneghat or the ponds of Company Bagh or Machhodari", they said.

But, the Puja organizers were not ready to take the idol at alternative waterbodies for immersion.
