Birthday of Chaudhary Charan Singh declared as public holiday

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's government declared December 23, the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, as a public holiday except for the banks and treasuries.

The Samajwadi Party has been one of the key political outfits that has been raking up Jat sentiments in the name of Chaudhary Charan Singh. It had joined hands with Rashtriya Lok Dal, Lalu Prasad led Rastriya Janta Dal, Janta dal (United) as well as Janta Dal (secular) after the Narendra Modi government shunted out Charan Singh son and RLD chief Ajit Singh from the government bungalow after he lost Lok Sabha elections.

This decision comes in contradiction to Modi government's decision of discontinuing the tradition of honoring Charan Singh on his birthday by organizing a function at Kisan Ghat in Delhi.
