Protests In Delhi Demanding Justice For Delta Meghwal

At a gathering outside the district collectorate seeking justice for the 17-year-old Dalit student raped and allegedly killed at a teacher training institute in Bikaner on March 29, activists said they had already met state home minister Gulab Chand Kataria and apprised him of the facts of the case. "We have conducted a fact-finding mission, and our report will be out by April 7," said Nisha Siddu of the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW).

She was a brilliant student and an amazing painter, having topped in an Art competition in whole of Rajasthan when she was in Stad XI. One of her artworks was featured in an art magazine published by Rajasthan secretariat in 2006, when she was just 7 years old.

The Real Story

Four days ago, on March 29, 2016  the dead body of Delta Meghwal, a 17 year old Dalit girl from a village in Barmer district of Rajasthan was found in the water tank of the Jain Adarsh Teacher Training Institute for girls in Nokha, Bikaner where she was studying. The police took her body in a municipal garbage carrying vehicle (tractor) without videographing it.

According to the FIR filed by her parents, there were only four girls at the hostel as all the other girls had gone home and had not returned by then. A day before, on the evening of March 28, at 8 pm, she had called her father and told him that their Warden Priya Shukla had sent her to the PT Instructor Vijendra Singh's room, with the excuse of cleaning the hostel.

The post-mortem report, however, showed that the girl's lungs were safe and not filled with water, as might have been the case if she had drowned. Her parents have maintained that it cannot be a case of suicide. "Police have not been able to offer an explanation for how she died," says activist Tolaram who has been aiding the girl's kin with legal procedures.

Suman Devatya of the All India Dalit Mahila Adhikar Manch said the owner of the institute, Eashwar Chand Vaid, should also be arrested.

At the gathering on Tuesday, Siddu recalled the death of Rohit Vemula in Hyderabad and the slogans raised by students at JNU. Meghwal's death too is causing ripples elsewhere in the country. On April 2, a group of people gathered outside the Town Hall in Bangalore seeking justice for the teenager.
