Rajasthan: Ex-armyman arrested for allegedly spying for Pak

Jaipur: In a joint operation, the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh (UP) on Sunday detained a former armyman from Pokhran in Jaisalmer for his alleged links with the Pakistani intelligence agencies, ISI.

Confirming the arrest, a senior police officer said that officials have detained a former army havildar for his alleged 'spying and anti-national activities' in Pokharan tehsil close to the international border in Jaisalmer district.

The accused has been identified as, Goverdhan Singh, an ex-armyman.

The detained spy, who is presently working as a patwari (revenue official) at Khetolai in Pokhran where nuclear tests are conducted, was being interrogated by the ATS of both states including Rajasthan and UP, state intelligence and military officials, said Alok Tripathi, additional director general of police (Anti-Terrorism Squad and Special Operation Group).

The 58-year-old Singh was suspected of being involved in anti-national activities and was under watch for several months, he said.

“Singh might be arrested after interrogation process is over. He is also likely to be questioned by Intelligence Bureau officials.”

Some important links were detected from the detained Patwari, he added.

Notably, on December 11, an official of the state-run Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) was arrested in Jaipur for alleged links with the Islamic State (IS) and urging youngsters to join the jihadi group.
